Profile:

The Sunbury district is a new electorate created in 2014 to cover the growing north-west of Melbourne, created out of parts of the Macedon district. It is centered on the town of Sunbury and also includes the towns of Diggers Rest, Bulla, Westmeadows and Gladstone Park.

At the time of its creation, Sunbury was estimated to be a reasonably safe Labor seat, who gained it at the 2014 State Election.

The electorate is solidly working class. Most people living in the area are high school educated or have some level of vocational education; while very few have university degrees. The majority of the population have parents who were born in Australia (50.8%) and are Australian born (73%). Most people work in clerical or administrative roles, or in a trade. The most prominent religious group are Catholics (33% of the population).

Political Party: Labor (Incumbent MP)

Josh Bull has been the MP for Sunbury since the 2014 State Election. After completing a double degree in education and science, he taught locally before moving into politics - working as an electorate officer for former Yuroke MP, Liz Beattie and has also worked as chief of staff to federal MP Rob Mitchell. He has been actively involved in the Labor Party since 2003, serving as the Craigieburn Branch secretary for six years, a state conference delegate for three years, a member of the Education and Youth Affairs Policy Committee and the Sport, Culture and Tourism Policy Committee. He was accepted into the Australian Defence Force as an Army Reservist Officer cadet in 2013, though has been on leave due to work commitments.

Cassandra Marr is an electorate officer and also serves on a number of committees for local community groups and has a background in product marketing.


Assessment:

Sunbury is a seat where the demographics favour Labor over the Liberals.
