Seat of Murray Plains

(Northern Victoria)
Very Safe. Nationals 22.4%

Profile:

The Murray Plains electorate covers much of the northern rural border region of Victoria and was created out of the abolition of the Swan Hill and Rodney electorates leading up to the 2014 State Election. It is centered on the Murray River cities of Swan Hill and Echuca, including the towns of Kerang, Lake Boga, Cohuna, Rochester, and other towns in the Swan Hill, Gannawarra, Loddon and Campaspe local government areas.

Much like the predecessor seats that it replaced, Murray Plains is very safe for the Nationals - though there is potential that a high profile independent candidate could challenge this status. Current incumbent MP Peter Walsh held the seat of Swan Hill from 2002 up until it was abolished.

Peter Walsh has been the MP for Murray Plains since the 2014 State Election, previously serving as the MP of Swan Hill from 2002 to 2014, when that seat was abolished. He was the president of the Victorian Farmers Federation from 1998 until his election to parliament. He operated an irrigated horticulture and cropping enterprise before entering politics, producing tomatoes, cereals, oilseeds and legumes. He was also a director of SPC Limited, a member of the state Food Industry Advisory Council, and a board member of the National Farmers Federation.

Prediction:

Nationals retain

Murray Plains is the safest National Party seat in the state. Baring a high-profile credible challenge from an independent, Murray Plains will remain a safe Nationals seat.
