Seat of Morwell

(Eastern Victoria)
Marginal. Nationals 1.8%

Profile:

Morwell is an electorate located in Victoria's east and covers the regional centres of Morwell and Traralgon as well as the surrounding rural areas in the middle of Gippsland.

The electorate is one of the more Labor oriented rural seats owing largely to both the more suburban nature of the area compared to other rural seats, as well as the bigger working class demographic. Generally a marginal seat, it was held by Labor uninterrupted from 1970 to 2006, at which point it was gained by Russell Northe for the Nationals on the back of a large anti-Labor swing. In 2017, Northe left the Nationals to sit as an independent.

Prediction:

Tossup. Potential three-way contest between Labor, Nationals and an independent

The Nationals will be aiming to gain back Morwell, as will Labor. Furthermore, if Russell Northe were to run again as an independent, or if another high profile independent candidate were to stand, the seat could very well become a three way contest.
