Profile:

Melton is an electorate located immediately to the north west of the Melbourne metropolitan area and is centered on the City of Melton. It also contains the towns of Bacchus Marsh, Balliang, Balliang East, Blackwood, Brookfield, Greendale, Kurunjang, Mount Cottrell, Sydenham West, and Toolern Vale as well as parts of Diggers Rest, Plumpton, Rockbank and Truganina

The Melton district was created prior to the 1992 election and has always been held and retained by the Labor Party since that time, usually by large margins. Demographically, it fits a working class profile, with trades workers making up the bulk of the workforce, combined with administrative and clerical workers. Machinery operators also make up a significant portion of the workforce.

Ian Birchall moved from the inner suburbs of Melbourne to live in Kurunjang nearly 20 years ago and is a medical scientist currently holding positions at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health and the University of Melbourne. He is the Secretary of the Melton Hospital Group Committee and considers that the District of Melton has been neglected for too long by successive Governments. He has also campaigned extensively to push the Build Melton Private/Public Hospital program to all Political Parties.

Political Party: Independent (former Liberal)

Daryl Lang was born and raised in Ballarat and joined the Army at 18 where he qualified as an Environmental Health Officer. He was recruited to the Royal Australian Air Force in in 1989 and was deployed to a number of Australian airfields. Internationally, he was deployed to Malaysia while he served with the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai as a peacekeeper. He retired from the RAAF in 1995 and worked as a Public Health Manager until he moved on to work in the area of providing specialist disability services. He was the Liberal candidate for Melton at the 2014 election, as well as the Liberal candidate for the seat of Gorton at the 2016 Federal Election.

Labor should have no trouble regaining Melton.
