Seat of Hastings

(Outer Eastern Melbourne)
Fairly Safe. Liberal 7.3%

Profile:

Hastings is a district located just to the east Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula. It covers Hastings, Tyabb, Somerville, Pearcedale and the Casey fishing villages across to Tooradin. French Island is also included within the electoral boundary.

The seat was created prior to the 2002 State Election, where it was gained by Labor in an election which they won in a landslide across the state. Since then, it has been held by the Liberal party.

The electorate is very ethnically uniform; with most people coming from English and Australian backgrounds. There is also a very large population (40%+) who are not religious compared to the state average (31.7%)- Catholicism comprises the largest religious group, however, with 20.1% of the population identifying as such. Most people work in trades and a relatively large proportion of the population who work in the defense.industry.

Prediction:

Liberal retain favoured

Hastings was held by Labor following their landslide election win in 2002. Labor would likely only gain Hastings if they were on track for a landslide across the state.
