Seat of Gembrook

(Outer Eastern Melbourne)
Fairly Safe. Liberal 9.0%

Profile:

Gembrook is a district located on Melbourne's outer eastern fringe and extends into the rural areas immediately to the east of Melbourne. Included within its boundaries are Emerald, Cockatoo, Gembrook, Beaconsfield, and sizeable parts of Berwick and Pakenham.

The electorate was created in 2002, replacing the abolished electorate of Pakenham, which had its namesake moved into Bass. At the time of it creation, it was widely considered a safe Liberal seat. However, in the midst of their landslide election win that year, Labor were able to win the seat at the 2002 State Election and retain it until the 2010 State Election. The seat has since firmed up for the Liberal Party.

Political Party: Labor

Assessment:

Gembrook was held by Labor as late as 2010. They were unable to regain the seat in 2014, but it does suggest that the seat's margin is somewhat over-inflated and that the seat is within reach of the Labor Party.
