Geelong Region Seats:

Bellarine Geelong Lara South Barwon

Seat of Geelong

(Geelong Region)
Fairly Safe. Labor 6.0%

Profile:

The Geelong electorate centres on the central suburbs of Geelong and includes the suburbs of Belmont, Breakwater, East Geelong, Geelong, Geelong West, Newtown and South Geelong, Herne Hill, Manifold Heights, Newcomb, Newtown, St Albans Park, Thomson, Whittington and part of Fyansford. Despite being a relatively small seat in terms of land area, the demographics of the seat vary considerably and parts of the seat are showing signs of considerable gentrification.

In its current incarnation, it has been held and retained by the Labor Party all but two times (the 1992 State Election and 1996 State Election, where it was gained and retained, respectively, by the Liberal Party). Labor, however, came close to losing the seat in 2010.

Incumbent MP:

Christine Couzens (Labor) - since 2014. Pictured right.

Political Party: Liberal

Freya Fidge is a Human Resources manager and stood for Council as an independent candidate at the 2017 Geelong Local Council Elections.

Assessment:

Geelong on paper is fairly safe for the Liberal Party. Although Labor were strengthened following the last state redistribution, they still currently hold the seat by a smaller margin than they did post the 2006 State Election and came close to losing it in 2010. Though Christine Couzens should benefit from a new personal vote; if the Liberals are on track to doing particularly well, Geelong is still a seat that Labor shouldn't take for granted.

2014 Results:

Aside from the three main parties; the Shooters and Fishers Party (SFP), Country Alliance (ACA), Socialist Alliance (SA), an independent, and the Family First Party (FFP) all stood candidates in this electorate in 2014.
