Seat of Broadmeadows

(Northern Melbourne)
Very Safe. Labor 27.8%

Profile:

Broadmeadows is an electorate located in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and includes the suburbs of Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Dallas, Fawkner, Jacana and Meadow Heights. It also includes parts of Glenroy, Roxburgh Park, Somerton and Westmeadows.

Constituting staunchly working class suburbs - the electorate has been very safe for the Labor Party for most of its history, though the Liberal Party did gain the seat when it was first created in the 1950's. Notably, former Premier of Victoria, John Brumby, held the seat for Labor from 1993 to 2011.

It is one of the poorest areas in Victoria in terms of average income. The area also has a high level of unemployment, which sits at 13% according to the 2016 Census, nearly double the state average of 6,6%. It has large populations of Turkish and Arabic speakers; with Islam being the largest religious group (35.1% compared to the state average of 3.3%). Of those in employment, most work in blue-collar occupations.
