Profile:

The electorate of Brighton is located within the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne and includes the suburbs of Brighton and Elwood, as well as parts of Brighton East and Hampton.

Brighton is one of three electorates to be in continuous existence since 1856. The seat has always been held by the Liberal Party and its predecessors.

Incumbent MP:

Louise Asher (Liberal) - since 1999. Pictured right. She is not standing for reelection in 2018.

Political Party: Liberal.

James Newbury currently works in the private sector, in the financial services industry, for the Australian Retail Credit Association (ARCA), the peak body representing organisations involved in credit reporting, as Public Affairs Manager and as Group Company Secretary. He has also previously worked in the public sector and has spent a decade working for the Liberal Party at both a State and Federal level - including as a Senior Advisor to then-Premier Denis Napthine and as an Advisor to Federal MP Christopher Pyne, among others.


Assessment:

Brighton is safe for the Liberal Party. The Greens could challenge for second place in 2018.
